After a few months of cold Sydney work life I finally saved enough to get to Cairns. Secondly to Airlie Beach Cairns has to be one of the best places to party in this country. It was so good I actually went there twice in the space of a year.The Great Barrier Reef was just a bonus.

Cairns is where I completed my PADI Advanced Open water dive course. I went with Cairns Dive Centre for a 4 day liveaboard dive course which was absolutely fantastic. I originally looked at diving with a company called Down Under Dive but they seemed very up themselves and I had heard lots of good things about their learn to dive courses. Also after a buit more digging I found out they had probably one of the best dive centres.

Their liveaboard dive boat has been fully refit and has all the mod cons installed. It has very nice ensuite cabins which cater for 2-4 people, has a large saloon, communal lounge and even a floating bar. As a bonus it even has a small spa on the front deck to sit in and have a beer. The catering was superb and served from a very well built galley, one of the best things they prepared was probably the most basic of all and that was potato wedges with sweet chili sauce which was often sat waiting for us on deck for when we finished diving. Yum Yum.

The boat is always based at the outer reef but would move every so often to different parts of the reef, which would either be done over night if some distance or early in the morning if closeby. This was pretty good as you get to dive a variety of reefs and have a truly unique dive holiday. These guys had a fast transfer boat which delivers you to your liveaboard boat which also allows you to add another night if you want.

I truly couldnâ??t recommend another company to teach me to learn to Scuba Dive in Cairns but if you decide to look elsewhere please be very careful when choosing a dive course in Cairns as many dive schools use inexperienced newly qualified instructors.

Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.

The reef is the largest coral system  in the world, made of more than 2,800 different reefs, and some 900 islands and cays that stretch over 344,000 square kilometres. The Great Barrier Reef, located approximately 20 km from Cairns, is home to hundreds of kinds of aquatic animals and was given World Heritage status, in the early eighties, to protect its beauty for future generations.

if you are looking for a romantic getaway then consider purchasing a low scenic flight over the reef, as the views are highly photogenic and you can sometimes glimpse dolphins and large fish in the perfectly clear waters from the air. Also, you can be dropped off on a deserted sand cay for the afternoon with just an esky, a delicious lunch, and a umbrella, as well as snorkelling gear, and then collected at the end of the day. Finished in the 1990’s, the Skyrail spans 7.5 kilometres over the Barron Gorge National Park, and is acclaimed as being simply breath-taking, even for those people who are afraid of heights. 
Expert Travel Tip:
When going on the Kuranda Train and the Skyrail Cablecar I also advise visiting the Tjapukai Indigenous theme Park, because here you will learn how to throw a woomera , play the music sticks and enjoy Aboriginal dancing, which is lots of fun for all the family, in additional to learning about Aboriginal culture. Also make time to visit the markets.

Lizard Island:

Located about 250 kilometres from Cairns, Lizard Island is one of the many islands located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Expert Travel Tip: I strongly recommend Mike Ball Dive Expeditionâ??s 3 night fly / dive expedition which starts with a stunning light aircraft flight along the barrier reef, landing at Lizard Island to meet up with the dive vessel that will be your home for the next 3 days. I had done numerous scuba tours before I went on this trip, and I was amazed by the fish life that I had never seen before like the beautiful butterfly cod fish and the ghost pipe fish. And if you think you canâ??t dive then think again, an resort dive is perfect, as long as you are free from medical complaints such as heart defects, or asthma, and it is an enjoyable way to experience the reef for everyone.

The Outback

Some of the sights that you will come accross when visiting the Outback are spectacularly coloured landscapes and amazing rock outcrops that are incredible, red earth that blazes brighter than fire embers, and indigenous art and culture that makes you understand what it truly means to be an Aussie.

Located about four hours from Cairns, Undara is a series of lava tubes that is situated in the rich red soil of outback Australia. Surrounded by Australian desert, Undara, which was created by long extinct voilcanoes, gives visitors a taste of Mother Natureâ??s spectacular qualities. 
Expert Travel Tip: Due to the travel time to reach Undara from Cairns, a three day, two night holiday package is the best way to enjoy this region. I highly recommend the guided 2 hour lava tube tour and the sunset wildlife tour, however there are also longer tours possible for tourists that want to see more of the area.

I boarded the Oz experience bus to Cairns on a drizzly grey day in Melbourne.

The Oz experience bus I took was pretty eye catching with its bright orange paintjob and was also very comfortable with leather seats and air conditioning. They kind of encourage you to get to know each other on the bus, and you have to play a sort of musical chairs, where when you hear a certain song played you have to walk around the bus untill it stops, then sit in the first seat you can find and introduce yourself to the person next to you.

I couldn’t count how many times we stopped, but at every stop it was like Groundhog Day “So here we have a McDonalds Cafe, or a Hungry Jacks or a Pizza Hut….” We were SICK to death of fast food. Apparently Australia is one of the most obese countries in the world, and although I didn’t see too many fatties, I can now beleive that fact. It’s probably worth mentioning at this point a funny thing about names in Australia. “Hungry Jacks” is Burger King- god knows why they changed the name for Aussie people, but obviously they would be much more hungry at Hungry Jacks than they would be for “Burger King”. They have some strange names for fast food places, such as “Eagle Boys” and “Chicken Treat”. I was also surprised that their main supermarket is Woolworths, because in England Woolworths went bust in the credit crunch.

We stopped at a Koala Hospital, which is full of sick and injured Koalas needing looking after, and they even have their own Koala Ambulance. A lot of the Koalas have “Chlamydia” and like true teenagers we all chuckled to ourselves every time it was mentioned. In koalas it causes urinary tract infections and incontinence, so they all have a situation called “wet bum”. Nice. No-one could ever forget the lady who ran the place, who had purple eyeshadow and bright red lipstick and looked as if she had really walked out of Summer Bay. I wanted her to be my aunty. She was really into the Koalas, and even demonstrated the Koala lovemaking sound for us.

Our next destination was a Surf school. It is mysteriously located at Spot X so I can’t tell you where it is, but the surf school is included in the Oz Experience trip. You have to pay a surcharge of around $50 for your food and camping but at least the lesson is included. We were allocated tents, which all looked very similar, and boys kept “accidentally” walking in on us getting changed. We were herded like cattle to get our dinner like in a prison and then we all gathered round a camp fire with our goon for a bit of a sing song. One of the surfers of course was an ‘aspiring musician’ and continued to sing badly on his guitar and promote his ‘CD’. It’s amazing how, even if they are completely unnattractive, instructors in any discipline transform into sex gods. Girls were sitting on the floor right in the instructors face like true groupies.
